I for one have never realized that ads had as large of an effect on the human psyche as the author makes clear. As I began to read this essay I noticed that the ads were made to say men can do anything to women, such as talk to them and touch them inappropriately.
It is not only women who are being exploited in media though. Kilbourne briefly describes the recent attack on the male body exploited in the media. I think that she underestimates the serious psychological effect that these ads have on males. The ads that have perfectly sculpted, buff, well dressed men with shaved bodies define a body image that men must keep up with.
Just like women, men are self-conscious about their body image as well and view these ads as serious threats.
We think this is how we are supposed to look, and women and men will not view us as attractive if we do not fit into the mold.
Though the essay is mainly about women and how it is made acceptable to be violent towards them a whole spectrum of sexual assault is brought up from vocal to physical. Women are made to be venerable and weak, they are also made to be temptresses who provoke the sexual assault that is brought upon them.
Countless times a day, for years upon years, does the public see ads that brainwash them into thinking its ok. I am now going to scrutinize ads when I am looking and be more conscious about how I act thanks to this essay.Another way the woman is presented in advertisement is as a prospective victim.
